Victims lawyers meet with President Kovind and demand the President rule in West Bengal

Published

on

At the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi on Friday, a group of attorneys representing victims of the West Bengal post-poll violence met with President Ram Nath Kovind. They requested President’s Rule in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal by submitting a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind. Following the meeting, BJP leader and attorney Kabir Shankar Bose told the media that the state’s law and order had disintegrated. At 4.30 p.m. today, this group will undertake a peaceful candle march from Gate No. 6 of Patiala House Court to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Kabir Shankar Bose of the BJP stated, “In Bengal, there is no rule of law. In Bengal, there is no democracy. Bengal should be placed under President’s Rule right now. Murders have been committed up to this point. Bengali moms and daughters are being raped. These crimes are being aided by the cops. We, the attorneys of the Delhi NCR, the High Court, and the Supreme Court, have petitioned the President to impose President’s Rule forthwith.”

“The President of India listened to us with great patience. He listened to us for almost 20 minutes. He is deeply concerned about the situation in Bengal. He is also well-versed in the events in Bengal. We had a productive and successful conversation with him. And he promised us all that he would carefully consider our representation and memoranda, and that whatever needed to be done, he would look into it “Added stated.

Post-election violence in West Bengal

The BJP, Congress, CPI(M), TMC, and ISF were all outraged by the violence that erupted in West Bengal after the Assembly election results were announced in 2021, which killed at least 16 lives. In the meantime, a petitioner has filed a case in the Calcutta High Court against the state’s post-poll violence. The five-judge panel, which included then-Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Rajesh Bindal and Justices IP Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen, and Subrata Talukdar, ordered the NHRC chairwoman to appoint a committee to investigate all charges related to the incident.

The NHRC committee stated in its report dated July 12 that the situation in the state is a manifestation of the ‘Law of Ruler’ rather than the ‘Rule of Law.’ The Calcutta High Court decided to order a CBI inquiry in instances of murder and crimes against women on August 19 after ruling that TMC’s charges of bias against the NHRC panel are without substance. All other instances reported by the NHRC were also committed to an SIT led by IPS officers Suman Bala Sahoo, Soumen Mitra, and Ranbir Kumar.
