80-Year-Old Navi Mumbai Man Duped of ₹4.38 Crore in ‘Digital Arrest’ Cyber Scam
An 80-year-old man from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, has fallen victim to an elaborate cyber fraud, losing Rs 4.38 crore in a so-called “digital arrest” scam. The incident, reported by the Navi Mumbai Cyber Police, highlights the growing threat of sophisticated online frauds targeting senior citizens.
According to the police, the scam began in November when the victim, a retired director of an engineering institute, received a phone call from individuals claiming to be officials from a cyber protection agency. The callers alleged that his Aadhaar number had been misused in money laundering and other serious crimes. To instil fear, the fraudsters impersonated officers from various agencies, including the police and central investigative bodies, and shared forged documents over WhatsApp.
The victim was told that an arrest warrant had been issued against him but was being temporarily withheld due to his age. Under constant pressure and fearing legal consequences, he was instructed to transfer money from his bank accounts to so-called “verification accounts” to prove his innocence. Trusting the callers, he transferred large sums over multiple transactions between November and January.
Investigators later found that the victim’s bank account was also used to route around Rs 1.02 crore stolen from other fraud victims, unknowingly turning him into a conduit for laundering illicit funds. The fraud came to light after suspicious transactions were flagged, leading to the freezing of his accounts.
An FIR has been registered, and police are tracing the digital trail to identify those involved. Authorities have urged citizens, especially senior citizens, to remain cautious and verify any claims made by callers posing as officials.

Potholes and damaged roads to be fixed on key routes used for Ganesh idol processions and immersions.
The Repairs
With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to inspect damaged roads and take up urgent repairs, with priority being given to routes that will witness the movement of large Ganesh idols and immersion processions. Engineering teams are inspecting roads for potholes, uneven surfaces, damaged manholes and problems with storm-water drains. To improve monitoring, officials are also geo-tagging potholes so that their locations can be tracked and repairs can be completed without missing important stretches. The civic body is also working on improving street lighting, cleanliness and facilities at immersion points to make the festival more convenient for citizens.
For many residents, smooth roads are more than just a civic issue during Ganeshotsav they are essential for ensuring that processions can move safely and families can participate in the celebrations without worrying about potholes and damaged stretches. NMMC has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the civic authorities and celebrate the festival responsibly, while keeping the city clean and environmentally friendly.
