Meta deactivates network of Russian profiles on Facebook

Published

on

Fb parent Meta Platforms Inc announced on Thursday that it had terminated a Russian network for allegedly abusing its capabilities to report and suspend accounts in Ukraine and Russia for probable platform policy violations.

Meta alleged that a Belarus-based gang attempted to hack into the Facebook accounts of Ukrainian military officers, according to sources. During the continuing crisis in Ukraine, Meta claimed it has also eliminated hacking campaigns, influence networks, and scam operations, and that it is considering more steps to combat misinformation on Russian official pages.

Ukrainian military leaders’ Facebook accounts were hacked by a group of hackers with ties to the Belarusian government, who posted videos calling for the Ukrainian army to surrender. The posts looked to be from authentic account owners, according to Meta.

According to Meta, the hacking campaign was launched by a person known as “Ghostwriter.”

“We took down a Russian-based network of roughly 200 accounts.” The perpetrators conspired to fraudulently report people for a variety of offenses, including hate speech, bullying, and inauthenticity, to have them and their postings removed from Facebook,” Facebook stated.

Russian hackers allegedly targeted persons in Ukraine and Russia, with users in Israel, the United States, and Poland also reported on the network.

People reporting the accounts used false, authentic, and duplicate accounts to file thousands of complaints against their targets using Meta’s abuse reporting tools, according to the business.

“Our automatic systems discovered and disabled many of this network’s accounts,” Meta explained.

Russia has imposed a ban on Facebook and Google, accusing them of disseminating false information.

This comes less than a month after Russia announced that Facebook would be banned in the country due to the internet giant’s restrictions on Russian media on its platform. The Kremlin had retaliated against Twitter and other tech companies for imposing arbitrary restrictions on Russian official media RT and Sputnik.

Surprisingly, Meta Platforms Inc. had already relaxed its hate speech policy, allowing users in some areas to call for murder against Russians and Russian soldiers on Facebook and Instagram. Meta Inc. has temporarily altered its hate speech policy to allow users to publish anything that promotes violence, such as a death threat against Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Later, Russia outlawed Meta, labeling it an extremist group, as well as Google News, for propagating false information.
