In a fake marriage scam, a Kamothe woman was defrauded.

The Fraud

In a shocking case of online fraud, a 40-year-old woman from Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, was cheated of Rs 16 lakh by a man who posed as a prospective groom on a matrimonial website. The accused, identified as Nilesh Nifade Patil, claimed to be a businessman from Shirwade Vani village in Nashik district.

According to police reports, the victim came into contact with Patil in 2018 through a matrimonial portal. Over time, he gained her trust and allegedly convinced her to invest money into his so-called business ventures. Between June 2018 and June 2022, the woman transferred Rs 16 lakh to Patil through multiple transactions. The two also met several times at Pune railway station, further deepening her belief in his intentions.

However, when the woman later demanded her money back, Patil continuously delayed repayment with excuses, eventually cutting off contact. Realising she had been duped, the victim approached the Kamothe Police Station, where an FIR was filed. The case has since been transferred to Bund Garden Police Station in Pune, as most meetings and transactions occurred there.

Police are currently investigating the matter and have urged citizens, especially those using matrimonial or dating platforms, to remain cautious. They emphasized verifying personal and financial details before making any monetary commitments. The incident highlights the growing trend of cyber-enabled marriage scams targeting vulnerable individuals seeking companionship online.
