Navi Mumbai Phone Trader Duped of Nearly ₹3 Crore in Massive iPhone Purchase Scam

Published

A mobile phone trader from Panvel, Navi Mumbai, was allegedly cheated of nearly Rs 2.7 crore after placing a bulk order for 600 iPhones with a Jaipur-based company. The victim, 49-year-old Vishal Tyagi, had been dealing with the same supplier since June 2023 and trusted the firm due to previous successful transactions.

According to police, Tyagi initially intended to order 150 iPhones but decided to increase the order to 600 after the supplier promised discounted rates for bulk purchases. To secure the deal, he transferred a substantial amount through RTGS to multiple bank accounts provided by the company.

However, despite repeated assurances, the phones were never delivered, and no refund was issued. After months of waiting and continuous follow-ups, Tyagi realized he had been duped and lodged a complaint.

Based on his statement, police have booked four individuals from Rajasthan: company owner Pushpapuri Goswami, her associates Abdul Shamim and Aman Shamim, and company manager Wasim Ahmed. The accused have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to cheating and criminal breach of trust.

Investigators suspect that the accused may have targeted multiple traders using similar tactics. A probe is underway to trace the suspects, track the financial trail, and recover the defrauded amount.

The case highlights the rise of high-value online trade scams, especially in the booming smartphone distribution market, and has prompted police to advise traders to verify bulk suppliers thoroughly before making large payments.

The Storage

In a major relief for Navi Mumbai residents, water levels at the Morbe Dam the primary drinking water source for the region have reached 75.66% of its total capacity, following consistent monsoon showers across its catchment area in Khalapur.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) officials confirmed that the rising water levels significantly reduce concerns over potential water cuts or supply disruptions in the coming months. The steady inflow has ensured a secure drinking water buffer for over 15 lakh residents across the city.

While the current stock is sufficient to meet daily demand well into early next year, civic engineers noted that sustained heavy downpours are still required for the reservoir to hit 100% capacity and overflow. NMMC continues to monitor catchment rainfall closely to optimize seasonal storage reserves.
