In the midst of the ongoing confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, an Indian student was struck with a bullet in the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, on Friday. General VK Singh, Minister of State (MoS) for the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), verified the news, saying the student is in the hospital and being treated.

“A student from Kyiv was reported to have been shot and was taken to a hospital in Kyiv right away.” The Indian embassy had previously stated that everyone should leave Kyiv as soon as possible. “The gun bullet does not consider anyone’s religion or nationality in the case of a battle,” he continued.

As per reports, Indian students in Ukraine are safely returning to India via nations bordering Ukraine. The Indian government is also putting in all necessary measures to rescue all Indian nationals who have become trapped in the conflict. Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, and Gen (Retd) VK Singh, four Union Ministers, are looking into the evacuation activities in the nations bordering Ukraine.

Previously, an Indian national from Karnataka named Naveen was murdered in shelling in Kharkiv. Kharkiv is a large Ukrainian city in the east where Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been engaged in heavy warfare. The MEA expressed its great sadness at the news and asked that the Russian and Ukrainian ambassadors secure safe passage for Indian people fleeing the crisis zones.

Nearly 20,000 Indian students, the majority of whom were studying medical, were stranded in Ukraine as a result of the conflict. Sixty percent of the total have already arrived in India and are safe. Efforts are underway to evacuate the remaining 40% of Indian nationals.

For the trapped Indian students, the Indian government has launched ‘Mission Ganga,’ an evacuation operation. Several special planes have been operating to return the students from Poland, Romania, and Hungary. On a special Indigo flight, almost 200 more students and Indian citizens arrived in Delhi yesterday.

Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have joined the Operation Ganga mission, flying to Delhi and Mumbai from Ukraine’s surrounding countries.
