Indians trapped together in war-torn Sumy amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict plead for help

As the war between Russia and Ukraine entered its ninth day, a group of Indian nationals stranded in the Sumy region, largely students, resorted to social media to request evacuation. They are regularly posting updates from the northern Ukrainian border town, imploring the Indian government to rescue them before the crisis worsens, citing the depletion of crucial supplies.

Mahek Shaikh, a medical student in the group, posted an eight-second video of what appeared to be a bomb explosion in the area. “The city is completely blacked out, with no power or water, and many bomb blasts close.” She said in her message, “Slow network.”

Radhika Sangwan, another student, reported that roughly 700-800 students, including herself, are currently stranded in Sumy. “I am a Sumy, Ukraine, student. YES, WE ARE Alive!!! Sumy has between 700 and 800 students. It’s the seventh day of the attack, and we still haven’t heard anything about our evacuation. We are being affected by stress, fear, and anxiety. There is no longer any hope. Please assist,” Sangwan said in a tweet on Thursday.

On Sunday, the Indian embassy in Ukraine issued a statement saying that heavy fighting has been reported in Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kyiv and that Indian nationals in those cities, as well as wherever curfews are in effect, should avoid going to railway stations until the curbs are lifted and civilian movement is restored.

Furthermore, sources report that buses and trains have ceased service in Sumy, while highways and bridges leading out of the city have been damaged, and street violence has erupted.

Three medical students who took sanctuary in a bunker released a video pleading for evacuation, stating that they are running out of essentials such as food as the situation worsens.

“It’s dark. There’s no power.” We’ve depleted our water supply. We were forced into the bunker because of a massive explosion. One of them requested that they be evacuated.

Several armed folks were seen walking outside their accommodation in another video uploaded by Shaikh on Thursday. “As we gaze out the window of our room, we notice yet another sighting of armed men patrolling our hotel. It is dangerous to go outside, and the Indian Embassy advises that we take trains and cross cities. She wrote, “Please evacuate us before the situation worsens.”

Operation Ganga was launched by India in an attempt to rescue nationals from Ukraine. However, intense combat has been reported in the eastern section of the war-torn country, raising concerns about the evacuation.

Navi Mumbai Civic Body Bridges the Healthcare Gap with Free Screenings and Follow-up Care Across Local Centers.

The Drive

In a major boost to public health, 1,292 citizens were screened during a free cancer detection drive conducted across various health centers by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).

The initiative focused on early detection for common cancers including oral, breast, and cervical cancers giving local residents access to crucial preventive care close to home. Medical teams set up diagnostic stations at Urban Primary Health Centers (UPHCs) to ensure seamless access, particularly for working-class and middle-income families.

Beyond basic checkups, civic health teams provided guidance on early warning signs, lifestyle risks, and the importance of routine health monitoring. Citizens identified with potential symptoms received direct referrals to municipal hospitals for further testing and subsidized follow-up treatment.

Community health drives play an essential role in saving lives by catching illnesses before they progress. By making preventive care accessible to all, NMMC continues to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the city.

Meta Multispeciality Hospital in Ghansoli opens with free care for newborn baby girls and elderly citizens.

The Hospital

Access to quality healthcare just got a major boost for local families. Meta Multispeciality Hospital officially opened its doors in Ghansoli Sector 4, promising state-of-the-art medical technology alongside a deeply human approach to community care.

The facility was inaugurated by Forest Minister and Palghar Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, who toured the premises to inspect its emergency wards, OPD facilities, and advanced diagnostic machinery. Speaking to attendees, Naik praised the hospital’s leadership for prioritizing affordable, high-quality treatment for middle-class households.

What sets the hospital apart, however, is its landmark social welfare initiative announced during the opening by community leader Sagar Chougule and hospital administrator Dr. Swarna Shelke:

  • Free Maternity Care for Girl Child Deliveries: To celebrate and encourage the birth of female children, the hospital will waive all delivery charges for mothers giving birth to baby girls.
  • Free OPD Services for Seniors: Outpatient consultations will be entirely free for senior citizens aged 65 and above.

“Healthcare shouldn’t feel like an unbearable financial burden,” said Dr. Shelke. “Our primary goal is to bring modern medical infrastructure within reach of every everyday citizen.”

With monsoon-related illnesses on the rise, the team also plans to host free community health camps to catch seasonal infections early. By blending modern medicine with genuine community compassion, the new hospital aims to build a healthier, safer Navi Mumbai.
