TN Resolution Opposing Mekedatu Project Criticised by Karnataka CM

Published

on

Despite the resolution voted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated on Monday that the Karnataka government is dedicated to completing the Mekedatu project. This happened after the Tamil Nadu Assembly approved a resolution endorsing all actions done to block the Karnataka government from building the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery River and preserve the interests of Tamil Nadu farmers.

In a series of tweets, CM Bommai called the resolution “illegal” and accused Tamil Nadu of lacking confidence in the federal system.

“The Mekedatu project is unlawful, according to a resolution passed today in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. This is an anti-people resolution in which a government attempts to trample on another’s rights. Tamil Nadu’s resolution demonstrates its opposition to the federal structure “In a tweet, Karnataka CM stated.

He went on to say that the Karnataka state government opposes the resolution and is committed to constructing a dam at Mekedatu on the Cauvery River, which flows through the state.

“After providing Tamil Nadu 177.25 tmc as per the Cauvery tribunal judgment, Karnataka now owns ownership of the remaining water. Regardless of Tamil Nadu’s political choice, the government is taking the required steps to complete the Mekedatu project “In a subsequent tweet, he remarked.

The state of Tamil Nadu has passed a resolution against the development of the Mekedatu dam.

Durai Murugan, the Tamil Nadu water resources minister, introduced a motion in the Assembly rejecting Karnataka’s decision to allocate funds for the construction of a reservoir at Mekedatu, claiming that Tamil Nadu is in a situation where it must beg for water. He also asked the Centre not to grant the Mekedatu project the necessary technical, environmental, and other clearances.

It should be mentioned that CM Bommai just submitted the Karnataka State budget, which included a grant of Rs 1,000 crore for the Mekedatu project this year.

After the latter intended to build a reservoir at Mekedatu in Ramanagara district, 90 kilometers from Bengaluru and 4 kilometers from the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, the Mekedatu project has fanned the water conflict between the two states.
