There are no plans to privatise railways: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Published

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed on Saturday that perhaps the Centre has no plans to privatize the national carrier and stressed the need of the sector to accept new technologies to satisfy customer expectations, particularly in terms of safety and comfort.

He stated while virtually inaugurating the 20th all-India conference of the Bharatiya Railway Mazdoor Sangh (BRMS) at Rail mandapam, Perambur, from Delhi, that technology should be indigenous, like the contribution of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) to Vande Bharat Express.

ICF developed and produced the Vande Bharat Express in Perambur as part of the Centre’s Make in India project.

“The opposition parties have often claimed that the railways are being privatised. I’d want to declare unequivocally that the railroads are a large and complicated organization…there is no plan to privatise the railways. There are no such plans in the works “According to the minister. He stated that what is foremost in his mind (as an administrator) is to endeavour to do what is best for the railroads and to move it forward.

“There is no desire for railway privatisation,” Vaishnaw said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly stated that the Central government has no plans to privatise the railroads.

To achieve progress, the minister stated that technology must be flexed to fulfil the Aatmanirbhar Bharat aim. “This should satisfy the nation’s goals, as well as those of the youth, the expanding middle class, and the 8 million passengers. The contribution should be comparable to ICF’s participation in the design and construction of the Vande Bharat Express “He made the point.

The minister slammed the previous UPA administration for achieving so little on the recruitment front, claiming that the Narendra Modi government filled 3.5 lakh railway jobs and started recruiting for 1.40 lakh more. “Every 15 days, I go over the recruiting process to make sure it doesn’t become stuck,” Vaishnaw explained.
