The Airoli Clock Tower, Which Had Been Built For Decorative Purposes, Is Now A Waste Site

Installed for beautification purpose clock tower in Airoli becomes garbage dumping site.

The Tower

The Swachh Abhiyan program of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to beautify Airoli has encountered a roadblock. The clock tower located in Airoli Sector 3 Janata Market is surrounded by heaps of trash and is in disrepair. Designed to be a symbol of cleanliness and a timepiece, the tower has become a source of dispute for local merchants, traders, and residents equally.

The clock tower was constructed in place of a rubbish dump by the Corporation’s G Ward Division Office in an effort to improve the area’s visual attractiveness. But even with all the efforts to keep it clean, the place is still used as a trash dump, which gives the surrounding homes a bad smell.

A concerned resident named Prashant More voiced his displeasure with the state of affairs, pointing out that the municipal corporation had invested a significant amount of money—funded by taxes paid by the public—to construct the clock tower. “It is sad to witness the clock tower, which was constructed with public funds, being neglected in this way. Though the reality is far from that, the goal was to create a tidy and visually appealing space, More said.

Considering the early attempts to make the area better, local shopkeepers and locals are confused by the lack of maintenance and the ongoing garbage problem.

Residents are calling on the municipal solid waste help to act immediately to handle the trash problem as the stink gets worse. In addition to undermining the Swachh Abhiyan initiative’s goals, the condition puts the health of nearby residents and workers at risk.
