In response to the HC order, CIDCO initiates a major anti-encroachment drive in Uran
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has taken a major stand against massive encroachments and unlawful structures on its properties in Uran Taluka in response to the High Court’s directions. The action is a reaction to the growing problems that the encroachments are causing for the residents who commute, urban communities, and the communication infrastructure.
CIDCO, which owns land in several villages in Uran Taluka, including Navi Mumbai city, has had to deal with issues of migrants building constructions without permission, invading their land, and upsetting the panchayats in the neighboring villages. These incursions have resulted in large financial losses for the country. Unsettlingly, a number of the encroachers have engaged in unlawful activities, including the sale of narcotics and alcohol, endangering the public’s safety.
Action against these encroachments has been advocated by local residents and social organizations via repeated objections and concerns that they have voiced to CIDCO and the government. The CIDCO encroachment section has come under fire for inaction in the face of complaints.
The July 28, 29, and 30, 2015 filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court under Public Interest Litigation Nos. 138/2012; No. 80/2013 was a significant step forward in this respect. Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, the court directed CIDCO to remove unlawful buildings and encroachments from the Uran area right away.
Sources state that on February 6, 13, and 27, 2024, the police will be sent to Uran to deal with encroachments and unpermitted structures as part of the implementation of this court decision.
