Morbi bridge gujraat

On October 30, tragedy hit Gujarat when a suspension bridge in the Morbi region of the state fell at approximately 6:30 p.m., killing over 130 people. The Machchhu River’s Morbi Bridge dates back to the British era since it was used for 143 years to connect Darbargadh Palace and Lakhdhirji Engineering College. Here is a look at the development of the suspension bridge, which, according to the website of the Morbi Collectorate, “reflected the progressive and scientific nature of the rulers of Morbi.”

The Morbi Bridge’s past

The creation of the century-old bridge was a component of Morbi’s former ruler Waghji Thakor’s technologically advanced and adaptable metropolis, which was influenced by the colonialists. The bridge is reported to have been built along the same lines as the Ram and Lakshman Jhulas on the Ganga river in Uttarakhand by Waghji, who ruled Morbi till 1922. The bridge was a “engineering miracle,” according to the Morbi Collectorate website, since it utilised contemporary technology that was purchased from England and was built for only Rs 3.5 lakh.

On February 20, 1879, Richard Temple, the governor of Mumbai at the time, officially opened the bridge connecting Darbargadh Palace, the erstwhile royal house in Morbi, with Nazarbag Palace. The bridge, which has been in use for almost a century, was temporarily closed for Rs 2 crore in maintenance work. Just five days ago, after a seven-month renovation, was the public area reopened.

The Gujarat tragedy now has 133 fatalities.

The NDRF authorities working in the rescue efforts report that there have already been 133 fatalities in the catastrophe. Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, and Navy have deployed and have saved a total of about 177 individuals.

According to reports, hundreds of people crossed the bridge when it was only intended for a few dozen, which caused the wires to shatter. Eight people connected to the private business Oreva Group, which was hired to complete the refurbishment work, have been detained by the Gujarat Police. The company is currently under investigation.
