Maharashtra Karmchari Union demands bonus grants for municipal employees and teachers.

The Want

In anticipation of the approaching festive season, the Maharashtra Karmchari Union, under the direction of President Ravindra Sawant, has formally demanded that different types of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) employees be granted a Concessional Bonus Grant. Sawant underlined the necessity of offering bonuses to staff members with fixed salaries, officers employed in permanent establishments, drivers and conductors in the transportation department, and educators—including those paid hourly—in a letter addressed to the Municipal Commissioner and Transport Manager.

A bonus of Rs. 30,000 has been proposed by the union for workers receiving fixed salaries, drivers and carriers for the transportation department, and those paid on a daily basis. The demand is for Rs. 40,000 for officers and permanent employees. Furthermore, Sawant has asked the government to provide the Municipal Education Department with Rs. 40,000 for permanent teachers and Rs. 30,000 for teachers on fixed wages.

Sawant also expressed worries about the code of conduct for the forthcoming Legislative Assembly General Election, stating that if it is not settled in a timely manner, it may postpone the distribution of bonuses. In order to make sure that workers receive their compensation during the election season, he advocated for the bonus grant to be awarded prior to the code of conduct being put into effect.

Municipal workers look forward to Diwali, especially hourly-wage teachers who are underpaid and do not receive paid time off. They feel the pinch of low pay and inflation. Sawant underlined the severe need for assistance and implored the city government to respond generously by declaring the bonus as soon as possible. In order to lessen the financial strain on municipal employees and give them much-needed help during the festive period, Sawant stated that the Sanugrah (bonus) grant demand is an essential step.
