Sri Lankans are dissatisfied with Chinas inadequate response to the economic crisis

Published

on

Amid the ongoing chaos in Sri Lanka, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa last week that Beijing is willing to play a “constructive role” in the island nation’s socio-economic development and that China is aware of the problems and challenges that the country faces. According to ANI, during a phone discussion with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, China’s Premier stated that Beijing is eager to strengthen political mutual trust, strengthen solidarity, and work for a sound and steady growth of bilateral ties. Many Sri Lankans, on the other hand, think China has been in action throughout the current economic crisis.

In addition, on April 22, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Rajapaksa declared that he and his Chinese colleague Li Keqiang had a very productive chat. In a tweet, he emphasized that China is willing to provide urgently needed support as the island republic faces its greatest economic crisis since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.

According to ANI, Li also remarked that China understands Sri Lanka’s troubles and tribulations and that Beijing is eager to provide much-needed livelihood assistance to the South Asian country within its means.

Moreover, this telephone conversation occurred after the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) pledged RMB 200 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka. China has refused to restructure the island nation’s debt despite giving humanitarian relief.

Many Sri Lankans consider China’s failure to act throughout the crisis to be insulting.

According to True Ceylon, China’s vow to assist Colombo in overcoming the existing economic crisis is widely seen as ‘inadequate,’ according to ANI.

Sri Lanka had previously requested financial assistance from China as well as a restructuring of its debt to China, which amounts to around 10% of the country’s total foreign debt. According to ANI, China is reportedly having trouble processing Colombo’s request due to major impediments and challenges caused by Sri Lanka’s unilateral announcement of a debt payment suspension. Many Sri Lankans feel China’s lack of action during the extraordinary crisis is embarrassing, according to ANI.

Sri Lanka is experiencing a severe economic crisis.

Meanwhile, the Rajapaksa family, led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, is dealing with one of the country’s most serious economic crises, which has resulted in massive protests from outraged citizens. Sri Lanka’s economy has been strained since the advent of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Following the government’s decision to prohibit all chemical fertilizers to make the nation’s agricultural production organic, tourism has plunged into the country, followed by a collapse in the agriculture industry.

It is important to note that the recession has been blamed on foreign exchange shortages caused by a drop in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as negligent economic policies that have resulted in the country being unable to buy enough fuel, and people facing acute scarcity of food and necessities.
