On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen decided to establish an EU-India trade and technology council to address the problems of maintaining trustworthy technology and security in the face of fast geopolitical change.

During Modi and von der Leyen’s meeting, the decision was made.

The strategic coordination structure, according to the European Union, would enable both parties to address difficulties “at the nexus of commerce, trusted technology, and security,” and so enhance collaboration in these domains. Both parties agreed that fast changes in the geopolitical environment necessitate cooperative in-depth strategic engagement, according to the statement.

“The Trade and Technology Council could provide the political direction and structure required to operationalize political decisions, coordinate technical work, and report to the political level to ensure implementation and follow-up in areas critical to the long-term advancement of the European and Indian economies,” the EU said in the same declaration.

The EU stated that the EU and India share common values and interests, which provide a strong foundation for intensifying mutually beneficial and deeper strategic partnerships.

“Decades of strong relationship have connected the European Union and India, and they are resolved to intensify collaborative efforts to confront contemporary problems and geopolitical conditions,” it stated.

“The decision to establish a Trade and Technology Council would be India’s first with any of its partners, and the European Union’s second after the one it established with the United States,” the EU stated.

It stated that the establishment of the EU-India council is a critical step toward stronger strategic cooperation for the benefit of all EU and Indian citizens. Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, the European Commission President launched a two-day visit to India on Sunday.

Von der Leyen added Russia’s battle in Ukraine was a sharp warning that reliance on Russian fossil fuels is unsustainable, and urged India and the EU to work together more closely to boost clean energy consumption.

She also mentioned the importance of moving to “home-grown clean energies” in the aftermath of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in her speech to the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, visited von der Leyen before she met with Modi.

“I’m delighted to speak with @EU Commission President @vonderleyen. The future of the #IndiaEU alliance was discussed. They also discussed the economic and political consequences of the Ukraine war “Jaishankar sent out a tweet.
