Well with the creation of the new government in Punjab, led by Bhagwant Maan, the top priority for this administration is to get the state out of its Rs 3 lakh crore debt while also producing money to fund the party’s lengthy list of election promises and giveaways.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking about the state’s severe financial condition, has ordered an investigation into the state’s 3 lakh crore debt. “Earlier, Punjab took a loan of 3 lakh crore,” the Chief Minister said, adding that an investigation into the money’s use will be conducted. Mann also informed cops that any money that has been misappropriated will be reclaimed.

The Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has assumed debt of approximately Rs 3 lakh crore from the previous Congress and Akali Dal governments.

Punjab’s unpayable debts

In its interim budget for the first three months of the fiscal year 2022-2023, the Punjab government has set aside the biggest amount of money for loan interest payments. The state government, on the other hand, has cleared a three-month Vote on Account budget of Rs 37,120.23 crore.

The Congress administration added Rs 1 lakh crore to Punjab’s 3 lakh crore debt during its five-year tenure. Charanjit Singh Channi made over Rs 3,500 crore in announcements during his 111-day stint as Chief Minister. Punjab’s financial burden is predicted to exceed Rs 3.37 lakh crore by 2024-25, according to a study issued by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already asked the Centre for a bailout of 1 lakh crore rupees to help his state, which is heavily in debt. The Congress administration pledged 300 units of free power per month for every home before the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the elections. Furthermore, every woman in the state was given Rs 1,000 each month. Even the most reasonable estimates show that these projects will cost the government an additional Rs 20,000 crore per year if implemented collectively. Punjab’s outstanding debt has increased by Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 2.82 lakh crore during the previous five years.
