Mango stocks in the APMC market appear ample, Alphonso prices decline

Published

on

Alphonso and other mango types were in ample supply at the APMC wholesale market in Vashi. It was the biggest early March month supply in the previous 4–5 years as daily deliveries exceeded 10,000 boxes. Mango prices have decreased as a result of the increasing availability. According to traders, the fruit is now more reasonably priced for consumption, and the supply will stay strong through May 10—possibly exceeding 1 lakh boxes. Alphonso mangoes are being marketed for between Rs 2,000 and Rs 7, 000 per box (each box contains four to eight dozens of mangoes depending on size and quality), down from Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 per box two weeks ago.

Wholesalers and market analysts agree that as more farmers pick mangoes out of concern about rising mercury levels, the volume of supplies is anticipated to grow even more. “In the last four to five years, the market had seen the arrival of 5 to 8 thousand boxes of mangoes every day in late February and early March, but this year has surpassed that number. Prices drop as a result, according to APMC director Sanjay Pansare. In the past three to four days, about 11k boxes each day from all across Maharashtra and beyond have been coming at the market. More than 60% of the supply originates in Maharashtra, primarily from the Konkan area of Ratnagiri and Devgad, with the remaining 40% coming from neighbouring states of Gujarat and Karnataka.

A merchant predicted that arrivals from Gujarat will soon enter the Mumbai market by the end of the next month, bringing down rates. As with other mango-growing regions, farmers in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have begun to harvest mangoes. A farmer named Pandurang Gulve stated, “Heavy wind and rains are possible since the temperature is rising. Mangoes may be harmed in such a situation, and farmers who invested labour and resources may suffer. According to traders, a prolonged rainfall last year caused a delay in the delivery of Devgad Alphonso mangoes.
