Security Guards, Officials Assaulted During Anti-Encroachment Drive at Navi Mumbai APMC Market

Published

on

Tension escalated at the Navi Mumbai APMC market when an anti-encroachment operation turned violent on Friday. Hawkers allegedly attacked security guards and officials from the encroachment department while they were clearing unauthorized stalls from the busy market premises.

According to officials, the team had launched a routine action to remove illegal hawkers who were obstructing pathways and contributing to traffic chaos around the market. However, the situation quickly deteriorated when a group of hawkers began resisting the drive and physically assaulted the personnel. The incident was captured on video, which has since gone viral on social media, drawing strong public reactions.

The APMC police station has registered a case against the hawkers involved in the attack. Officials said that the increasing presence of unauthorized vendors in the market—one of Asia’s largest wholesale hubs—has led to growing issues of congestion, littering, and reduced pedestrian movement.

Some stakeholders allege that inconsistent enforcement and alleged support from certain officials enable hawkers to return soon after drives, worsening the long-standing encroachment problem. Despite these challenges, the encroachment team led by Turbhe department officer Sagar More continues to conduct strict operations to maintain order in the market area.

Authorities have stated that further action will be taken to ensure the safety of officials on duty and to prevent future incidents. An intensified crackdown on illegal hawkers is expected in the coming days.

Dark Stretches on Uran–Palaspe Highway Raise Accident Concerns

Published

Non-functional streetlights and parked container vehicles create safety risks for motorists at night.

The Concern

Several stretches of the JNPT–Palaspe and JNPA–Amra Marg highways in Uran have been left without proper street lighting, raising concerns among motorists and local residents about road safety. Streetlights at locations including Dronagiri, Dhatum, Karal, Jasai flyover and Gavhan Phata are reportedly not functioning. The problem is particularly concerning at night when visibility is already reduced.

The highways see heavy movement of container trucks and other vehicles throughout the day. However, many heavy vehicles are also parked along the main roads and service lanes. With some parked vehicles reportedly lacking proper warning lights or signs, motorists may struggle to spot them in the darkness. The situation becomes more difficult during the monsoon, when rain, potholes and muddy roads can further reduce visibility. Two-wheeler riders are especially vulnerable in such conditions, with the poor lighting increasing the possibility of accidents.

Uran Municipal Council president Bhavana Ghanekar has approached officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), seeking urgent action to restore the streetlights. According to reports, theft of oil from electrical transformers installed along the highways has also affected the power supply to the lighting system.

Residents and motorists have urged the authorities to repair the streetlights at the earliest and take additional safety measures along the busy highway stretches.
