In Navi Mumbai, new pump houses will distribute reclaimed STP water

Published

In order to improve the infrastructure for distributing recycled water from the reducing sewage treatment plants (STP) to various places, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has chosen to build three pump houses in the city. The $44.42 billion project will improve how sewage water is used and reduce the amount of ordinary water used in the city, saving the valuable resource.

The Amrut Abhiyan programme of the national government served as the planning framework for the initiatives. The federal and state governments will each provide 25% of funds to NMMC, bringing the total grant to 60% of the project cost.

“Every node in the city is properly connected with a network of sewage pipes that bring waste water to the STPs,” NMMC city engineer Sanjay Desai said. The civic body uses the sewage water that has been cleaned at the STPs to irrigate plants in gardens, in fountains, and on road barriers. The industrial operations in the Thane Belapur industrial belt are now supplied with treated water from two STPs.

He stated, “The civic council has received administrative approval from the government to create the pump houses at 3 STPs in order to further modernise the infrastructure. Sector 1 in Shiravane, Sector 6 in Belapur, and Sector 9 in Sanpada will see the development of these.

11,01 crore would be provided by the central government, while 19.99 crore will come from the state government, out of the total cost of 44 crore. The remaining 13.42 crores will be used by NMMC. Shiravane pump house will cost $10.90 cr, Sanpada pump house will cost 22.42 cr, and Belapur pump house will cost 11.10 cr.

Rajesh Narvekar, the municipal commissioner, said that making the best use of the resources already available will assist to prevent future shortages. The system upgrade that we are carrying out is necessary because we want to make sure that all of the city’s treated water is used in this context.

“Use of treated water would minimise consumption of water from the Morbe Dam, save on our expenses, create income from the sale of treated water and save the environment and the natural resources to support us in our time of need,” he concluded.
