Fast-Track Courts For Sexual Offense Cases Are Demanded At A Public Protest At Vashi Station

Public protest at vashi station demands quick proceedings for sexual offence cases.

The Protest

In response to the growing problem of sexual offences against women, 22 social organizations coordinated a sizable public demonstration that took place on September 4th next to Vashi Station. About 150 protesters participated in the event, which was held to call for the creation of Fast-Track Courts (FTCs) in order to speed the legal process in instances involving sexual offences.

Throughout its two-and-a-half hours, the protest included speeches, catchy songs, and calls for expedited court proceedings in an effort to increase public awareness of sexual offences and how they should be handled.

The significant organizer and trustee of Stree Mukti Sanghatana, Vrushali Magdum, stated her dissatisfaction with the situation of women’s safety at the moment. She underlined that women had to be regarded more than only as members of the feminine gender—with respect and compassion. Recent cases of sexual abuse were brought to light by Magdum, including the horrifying rape and killing of a PG doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, as well as incidences in Badlapur and Navi Mumbai.

‘Sakhi Savitri Committee’ should be implemented at all schools and universities, Magdum demanded, and women and girls should report sexual offenses instead of keeping them to themselves. She emphasized the necessity of prosecuting offenders in Fast-Track Courts under the Bharatiya Naya Sanhita (BNS). In addition to urging people to speak out against violence, Magdum gave the assurance that Rashmi Karle, the counsellor, is ready to provide advice at the Stree Mukti Sanghatana counselling office in Sector 1, Vashi.

Prominent activists expressed their support for the protest, including Ajit Magdum of Anvay Pratishthan, Prabha Mahesh of Alert India, Smita Wazekar of Lions Club, Amarja Chavan of NGO Forum, Sangeeta Saraf, trustee of Stree Mukti Sanghatana, Rukmini Pal of Pariksha Sakhi, Ashok Nikam of Andhashraddha Nirmulan, and others.

The organizations taking part said that this was only the start of the protest. They want to step up their efforts to put more pressure on the government to start prosecuting cases and set up Fast-Track Courts for sexual offenses. The public movement’s next stage will include a counselling campaign for female students in schools, with the goal of empowering and educating them about sexual abuse.
