BJP in a strong position after The outcome of Assembly elections
The BJP’s success in the assembly elections on Thursday has strengthened the party’s position ahead of the presidential election later this year.
According to political observers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi now has a free hand in deciding who would succeed President Ram Nath Kovind, who will finish his term on July 24, 2022.
If the Samajwadi Party had won the Uttar Pradesh election, the BJP would have had to rely on fence-sitters like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), who collectively control a significant portion of the vote.
The electoral college for presidential election includes members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and state legislative assemblies, as well as the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The electoral college does not include Legislative Council members or nominated members.
Former Lok Sabha Secretary General P Sreedharan told PTI that the NDA currently has the upper hand.
The electoral college has a total of 4,896 electors, with 233 Rajya Sabha members, 543 Lok Sabha members, and 4,120 members of legislative assemblies.
Every MP’s vote is worth 708, while every MLA’s vote is worth 208.
Uttar Pradesh had 83,824 votes, followed by Punjab (13,572), Uttarakhand (4480), Goa (800), and Manipur (800). (1080).
According to a political expert, the BJP has made the presidential elections a cakewalk with victories in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur.
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar was tipped as a prospective presidential candidate by a segment of the opposition. K Chandrasekhar Rao, the TRS supremo, and Telangana Chief Minister met with a group of opposition leaders, ostensibly to play a crucial role in the upcoming presidential election.
In an attempt to split the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the NCP has recommended that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar run for president as a joint opposition candidate if he breaks away from the BJP.
The presidential elections use a single transferable vote system to follow the proportional representation system. Based on the 1971 census, the value of each vote is pre-determined in proportion to the population of the corresponding state.
The electoral college has a total value of $10,98,903 with 4,896 electors, and the victorious candidate must receive at least 50% plus one vote to be declared elected.

Gold Chains Worth ₹10.5 Lakh Stolen at Rolling Loud India; Four Attendees File Complaints
A series of thefts marred the two-day Rolling Loud India music festival held in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, after four attendees reported that their gold chains—collectively valued at Rs 10.50 lakh—were stolen amid the massive crowd. The incidents occurred on Sunday evening, between 6 pm and 10 pm, during peak performances when thousands of fans had gathered near the stages.
According to police officials, the victims stated that their chains were forcibly pulled off their necks in the dense crowd without their notice. All four individuals have lodged formal complaints at the Kharghar Police Station, prompting authorities to begin an investigation. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage, analyzing crowd movement, and checking for known pickpocket groups that typically target large gatherings.
The thefts have raised concerns about the security arrangements at the international festival, which saw heavy footfall throughout the weekend. This is not the first time such incidents have been reported at major concerts in the Mumbai region, with similar cases emerging during previous large-scale events.
Besides the thefts, attendees took to social media to express dissatisfaction over event logistics, particularly the significant distance between the two main stages, which made moving between performances difficult amid the crowd.
The police have assured attendees that efforts are underway to identify the culprits and recover the stolen jewellery. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
