India trade agreement is approved by the Australian Parliament

The Australian Parliament approved an interim trade agreement with India on Tuesday. This agreement is likely to increase exports of Indian goods, including textiles, medicines, gems, and jewellery.

Australia’s House of Representatives passed the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which the two nations agreed in April, on Monday, and the Senate approved it on Tuesday. ECTA is scheduled to go into effect 30 days after being approved by the Indian Parliament.

New trade deals with India and the United Kingdom, according to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will expand already-existing trade and economic ties. According to him, “these new accords will generate new prospects for trade diversification and fantastic results for Australian industry and Australian families.”

Australia’s support for free trade and the rules-based trading system is shown by the passage of this legislation, which also acknowledges the “centrality of trade to our economic resilience,” according to Albanese.

India ranks as Australia’s ninth-largest trading partner, with a positive trade balance. $27.5 billion was exchanged in goods and services in two directions in 2021. Petroleum refinery products, pharmaceuticals, jewelry, made-up textiles, women’s clothing, pearls, and gems are the main exports to Australia.

According to a statement from Australia, the Albanese government swiftly advanced all procedures required to make sure that Australia could execute the trade deals with India and the UK before the end of 2022.

Don Farrell, the trade minister for Australia, stated stronger economic relations with India are “essential to the Australian government’s trade diversification policy” after working closely with his Indian colleague Piyush Goyal to push for the completion of ECTA.

“The quality of ECTA demonstrates India’s commitment to our bilateral economic partnership, in terms of market access and opportunity for Australian businesses,” he said. In order to implement the trade agreements as quickly as possible, Australia will “continue working closely with the governments of the UK and India.”

Businesses on both sides of the Indian Ocean will have easier access to markets because to the ECTA.
