Yet, the rising shadow of youth substance abuse has increasingly turned campuses into battlegrounds. Recognizing this silent crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has unveiled the “Campus Connect” initiative a compassionate, community-driven mission to make every educational institution across the state entirely drug-free.

Rather than relying solely on police enforcement and punitive measures, the state is now treating addiction as a societal issue that requires empathy, awareness, and education. At the heart of the campaign are over 4,000 newly established guidance and counseling committees. Comprising teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals, these support groups aim to identify and gently guide vulnerable students before they fall deep into the trap of addiction.

To solidify this commitment, Fadnavis has personally written to school and college principals statewide, urging administrators to take active ownership of their students’ well-being. Across Maharashtra, students and educators are already taking collective pledges to look out for one another and report drug-related activities. Furthermore, the government is integrating mandatory de-addiction lessons into the school curriculum, ensuring children understand the dangers early on. Partnering with local bodies like the Navi Mumbai Police, the state is expanding rehabilitation centers to provide specialized psychiatric counseling and medical care.

The Camp

A community initiative transformed Manyavar Kanshiram Ji Hindi School into a bustling hub of care and support. Organizers successfully hosted a comprehensive free health check-up camp alongside a targeted registration drive tailored specifically for single women.

The event was held under the guidance of former Mayor and current Municipal Councillor Sudhakar Sonawane, with key support from the Matoshree Anusaya Sambhaji Sonawane Charitable Trust and Health 360 Navi Mumbai’s Jagdish Naik. Led by Ranjana Sonawane, Chairperson of the Social Welfare and Slum Improvement Committee, and supported by NMMC Social Welfare Deputy Commissioner Prakash Kamble, the initiative sought to address overlooked health and administrative needs in the community.

A dedicated team including former Municipal Councillor Dr. Gautami Sonawane, social worker Rahul Sonawane, and the Gaura volunteer group worked tirelessly on the ground. Their efforts enabled more than 400 single women to secure on-the-spot registrations for government support schemes.

Simultaneously, medical teams delivered specialized healthcare services to over 400 attendees. Residents received comprehensive consultations, including:

• Vision Screening & Dental Care: Detailed exams to detect early vision issues and oral health concerns.
• Specialized Diagnostic Tests: Bone density scans and ENT evaluations.
• Full-Body Check-ups: Preventive health screenings conducted by medical specialists.

The Tragic Incident

A routine workday turned into a devastating tragedy at a high-rise construction site in Airoli Sector 20, where two workers lost their lives following a catastrophic equipment failure.

The deceased have been identified as 41-year-old Bobby Roy from Bihar and 34-year-old Rahul Mishra from Uttar Pradesh. Both men were working on the ground floor when a heavy steel beam being lifted by a tower crane toward the sixth floor suddenly plummeted toward them after a crane wire rope snapped under heavy tension. The sheer impact left both workers with fatal injuries before help could arrive.

Subsequent investigations and CCTV footage revealed glaring safety lapses at the site. Authorities noted that the management failed to enforce basic safety protocols: no barricades were set up around the dangerous lifting zone, and workers were permitted to stand directly underneath heavy overhead loads.

Following the incident, Rabale Police filed a formal case against the crane operator, site supervisor, and site management authorities. Charges have been brought under laws governing death by negligence. As legal notices are served to those responsible, the tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the human cost paid when workplace safety takes a back seat to progress.
