At least 173 passengers on a Rome-Amritsar charter flight were found to be Covid-positive after being tested on arrival on Friday, officials said. This is the second consecutive incident wherein a large number of passengers coming from Italy to Amritsar airport have tested positive for coronavirus on arrival. On Thursday, 125 passengers who were travelling from Milan to Italy on another charter flight were found positive after being tested on arrival at the Amritsar airport.

Amritsar airport director VK Seth told PTI on Friday, “Test results of 210 passengers have been shared with me. Out of them, a total of 173 passengers have tested positive.” “This flight came from Rome. It landed at around 12.20 pm today at the airport,” he added.

The officials said there were a total of 285 passengers on the charter flight that landed on Friday. District health authority officials said all 173 passengers, who were found positive, were being sent for institutional quarantine at their respective home town districts.

According to the rules of the Union health ministry, passengers coming from “at-risk” countries to India have to compulsorily get tested for Covid-19 on arrival at the airport. All European countries, including Italy, have been deemed as “at-risk” countries by the Union health ministry.

The Vijay Chougule family has registered a significant victory in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections, with members of the family winning their respective wards on Shiv Sena tickets led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The results have reinforced the political influence of the Chougule family in Navi Mumbai’s civic landscape.

According to election results, candidates from the Chougule family secured wins from key wards, highlighting their strong grassroots connect and sustained presence in local politics. The victories are being seen as a morale booster for the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), which has been aiming to consolidate its position in Navi Mumbai amid intense competition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Political observers note that family-based political networks continue to play a decisive role in civic elections, particularly in urban pockets where long-standing local leadership carries weight among voters. The Chougule family’s success is attributed to consistent public outreach, familiarity with local civic issues and an established organizational structure at the ward level.

Supporters celebrated the results, terming the mandate as public approval of the family’s developmental work and accessibility. Shiv Sena leaders from the Shinde camp also hailed the victory, stating that it reflects voter confidence in the party’s leadership and governance model at both the state and municipal levels.

The Navi Mumbai civic polls were held after a prolonged delay, making the results crucial for shaping the city’s future governance. With experienced local leaders returning to the civic body, expectations are high that pressing civic issues such as infrastructure, transport and basic amenities will receive renewed attention in the coming term.

The Chougule family’s win adds another chapter to Navi Mumbai’s evolving political dynamics, where personal credibility and party strategy continue to intersect in shaping electoral outcomes.

Navi Mumbai Records Highest Voter Turnout in MMR Civic Polls

Published

on

Navi Mumbai emerged as the leading municipal corporation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in terms of voter participation during the Maharashtra civic body elections, recording a turnout of around 57 per cent. The figure marks a significant rise compared to the 49 per cent turnout registered in the previous Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections held in 2015.

According to election data, Navi Mumbai and Panvel witnessed the highest voter engagement in the region, reflecting increased public interest in local governance after a prolonged gap between civic elections. Thane followed with an estimated turnout of 54 per cent, while other urban bodies across the MMR recorded comparatively lower participation.

Despite the encouraging numbers, polling in several areas was not without challenges. Voters in parts of Thane and other neighbouring cities reported issues such as missing names on electoral rolls, changes in polling stations, long queues and delays. Complaints of technical glitches, including problems with electronic voting machines, were also reported in some wards, causing temporary disruption during polling hours.

In cities such as Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi and Ulhasnagar, voter turnout was relatively slow during the early hours but improved as the day progressed. Election officials said additional staff and assistance were deployed to manage crowds and address grievances as they arose.

Officials and civic observers noted that the higher turnout in Navi Mumbai signals growing awareness among citizens about the importance of municipal governance and civic accountability. However, they also stressed the need for better voter list management and smoother polling arrangements to ensure a hassle-free voting experience in future elections.

Overall, the polling exercise highlighted both rising civic participation and persistent administrative challenges across Maharashtra’s urban local bodies.

Man Duped of ₹13.2 Lakh in Fake Gold Deal, Navi Mumbai Police Launch Probe

Navi Mumbai police have launched an investigation after a 56-year-old businessman from Sangli was allegedly cheated of Rs 13.2 lakh in a well-planned fraud involving a fake gold deal in Kharghar. The incident occurred on January 6 near Sector 20 and involved multiple accused, some of whom allegedly posed as police personnel.

According to police, the victim was lured to Navi Mumbai by three men who promised to sell gold at a five per cent discount. Trusting the offer, the businessman agreed to an initial transaction involving 100 grams of gold and arrived with cash for the deal. After meeting the suspects, he was told that the transaction would be completed at their office.

While en route, a white Ertiga car intercepted them. Five to six men emerged from the vehicle, claiming to be police officers. They questioned the businessman, seized his bag containing Rs 13.2 lakh in cash and fled the spot. One of the suspects who had accompanied the victim also escaped with the group, raising suspicions of a pre-planned conspiracy.

Following the incident, the victim approached the Kharghar police station and lodged a complaint. A case has been registered, and police have begun tracking the accused based on preliminary leads. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area and checking vehicle movement records to identify the fraudsters.

Police officials said the modus operandi suggests an organised gang targeting victims through fake investment or gold sale offers. Citizens have been urged to exercise caution while engaging in private transactions involving large sums of cash and to verify credentials before proceeding with such deals.
