Workers Of The NMMT Protest About Unresolved Issues

Published

on

Wearing black armbands while on duty, daily wage and contract employees of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport Department began a demonstration on Monday against the unresolved issues that have persisted after several follow-ups with the municipal administration. Labour leader Ravindra Sawant led the Maharashtra Karmchari Sangh, which is associated with the INTUC and ITF, in the protest.

The striking workers, who include drivers and transport personnel, have worked for more than 15 years on lump-sum contracts and daily wages. The personnel have worked continuously, yet they have not received pay raises, permanent employment status, or basic benefits like Mediclaim and uniforms.

Sawant demanded in a formal request to Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde that the administration take up these long-standing problems and give the transport workers the facilities they need.

“The administration’s negligence toward transport employees, who serve thousands of passengers daily, is unacceptable,” said Sawant. If their demands are not met, he threatened to call for a walkout from the government. Workers complained that they were forced to borrow money for medical care since they were not paid or given medical coverage in the event of an accident or illness.

Employees wore black armbands as a symbol of their displeasure and to draw attention to their situation, and the demonstration was well attended.

The Maharashtra Karmchari Sangh has called on the NMMC administration to carry out the 2010 Labour Commission Order and the Transport Committee Resolutions in order to raise wages, offer healthcare benefits and give suitable work clothes—all while the protest is still going on. Transport workers swear to keep protesting until their complaints are heard.
