Wife of Kirit Somaiya has issued Sanjay Raut with a defamation notice

Medha Somaiya, the wife of Maharashtra BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, has served Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut with a defamation notice in reaction to his ‘false and frivolous charges against her in connection with a Rs 100 crore toilet scandal. Medha Somaiya has requested an apology letter from Raut in her notice and has warned of legal action if the letter is not received within 48 hours.

“Dr. Medha Somaiya and Yuvak Pratishan are involved in a Rs 100 crore toilet fraud,” was published and spread in the public domain without any documented proof in electronic and print media.

Dr. Medha Somaiya, the wife of BJP politician Dr. Kirit Somaiya, has been a professor for 35 years, first at Ruia College and presently at Tata Institute of Social Science TISS,” the notification stated.

“Mr. Raut’s constant defamatory remarks, which are completely false, foolish, unjustified, untruthful, malafide, without application of mind, without any record/and or information, and are only made to defame our chief’s reputation and goodwill, thereby giving rise to Character Assassination,” the statement continued.

She has requested an ‘unconditional public apology within 48 hours for the offenses punishable under Sections 500,501, and 506 read with Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code.

MVA Govt. and Kirit Somaiya are at odds.

Notably, Lok Sabha member Kirit Somaiya and his son Neil Somaiya are accused of misappropriating funds raised to save the decommissioned military aircraft carrier ship Vikrant, which was demolished in 2014.

Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena MP, has accused the Somaiyas of taking Rs 50 crore from the public to fund the Save INS Vikrant campaign. The Bombay High Court has given the father-son duo interim protection from arrest till June 14.

In light of the charges, Somaiya’s SUV was attacked as he was leaving Khar Police Station last week after attempting to meet MP Navneet Rana and MLA Ravi Rana. The BJP leader was injured after his car glass was damaged as a consequence of suspected stone-pelting by 70-80 Shiv Sena workers.

As a result, he claims, the Bandra Police filed a “bogus FIR” in his name. A connection with the attack and the bogus FIR, he filed a suit in the Bombay High Court.

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Navi Mumbai Police arrested Jeorge Ocante DaSilva, a 35-year-old native of Guinea, on Monday for possessing 410 grams of cocaine, allegedly intended for illegal sale. Acting on a tip-off, API Alka Patil of the AHTU led a raid at RM Heights Building in Ulwe, where DaSilva was found in possession of the narcotics.

Around 2:30 p.m. on October 28, officers discovered 410 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately Rs 1,02,50,000, hidden in DaSilva’s bedroom. Authorities also seized a mobile phone, a black Tabata weighing scale, scissors, plastic packaging bags, and a sky bag, bringing the total seizure value to Rs 1,02,55,610.

An FIR was filed at Panvel City Police Station under Sections 8(a) and 21(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Dasilva was presented in court and remanded to police custody until October 31, 2024. Investigations are ongoing, with the Crime Branch seeking potential accomplices and sources of the narcotics. Notably, Dasilva has a prior NDPS case registered at Nahar Police Station in Mumbai.

The final day for filing nominations for the 2024 Vidhan Sabha General Election witnessed a surge of candidates in Thane district, with a total of 281 applications submitted across 18 assembly constituencies. This high turnout signals a competitive race for seats in the upcoming election.
