USA has announced new visa restrictions on Chinese officials over access to Tibet.

US has announced to impose new visa restrictions on Chinese officials over access to Tibet. These visa restrictions will be applied on Chinese government and Chinese Communist Party officials who are involved in restricting access to foreigners to Tibet. These restrictions are made under the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act of 2018. China’s authority over Tibet has disturbed relations between the US and China.
Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State tweeted on Tuesday, “Today I announced visa restrictions on PRC (People’s Republic of China) officials involved in restricting foreigners’ access to Tibet. We will continue to seek reciprocity in our relationship. “
“I am announcing visa restrictions on PRC government and Chinese Communist Party officials determined to be substantially involved in the formulation or execution of policies related to access for foreigners to Tibetan areas,” Pompeo added.
He stated that US officials, journalists, diplomats and tourists have been facing obstructions in travelling to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) and other Tibetan regions by China. On the contrary, Chinese officials and Chinese citizens enjoy far greater access to the US.
Pompeo declared that the US has always been committed to support “meaningful autonomy” for Tibetans and has great respect and regard for their fundamental human rights. He added that international access to Tibet holds great importance in terms of Tibetans’ regional, cultural and environmental security and also economic development of Tibet region. “Access to Tibetan areas is increasingly vital to regional stability, given the PRC’s human rights abuses there, as well as Beijing’s failure to prevent environmental degradation near the headwaters of Asia’s major rivers,” Pompeo said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.
Pompeo also said, “In the spirit of true reciprocity,  we will work closely with the US Congress to ensure US citizens have full access to all areas of the People’s Republic of China, including the TAR and other Tibetan areas.” However, he didn’t comment on who and how many Chinese officials were now barred to travel to the US.
US -China relationships have been degrading since years and the current outbreak of coronavirus pandemic has further ruined the relationship as US President Donald Trump has blamed China over and over again for not being transparent about the break. Amid such controversies, these visa restrictions move has added fuel to the fire. Moreover, Beijing’s crackdown against protesters in Hong Kong over a new national security law being imposed by China in Hong Kong, has also contributed to the worsening relations between the world’s two largest economies- United States of America and China.
