Ukraine and Russia are preparing to resume peace negotiations

Published

on

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that talks with Russia must lead to a ‘just… fair peace (with) real security guarantees,’ ahead of new attempts to terminate a nearly three-week-long special military action’ by Moscow that has so far failed to overthrow the Ukrainian government.

Zelenskyy said the discussions were now more realistic,’ implying that an end to the crisis, which has thrown Europe into instability not seen since World War II, is in reach. Sergei Lavrov, a Russian minister, said there was some prospect for compromise.’

However, the Ukrainian president emphasized that his country’s ‘neutral’ status – a crucial demand of Moscow – could not be achieved without strong guarantees that would safeguard it from future threats.

“Today, right now, we can and must fight. We have the ability and responsibility to defend our country, our lives, and our Ukrainian identities. “We can and must negotiate a just but fair peace for Ukraine, real security guarantees that will work,” Zelenskyy said in a video message, adding that “patience is still required.”

The Kremlin stated earlier today that talks were underway to give Ukraine a status similar to Austria’s or Sweden’s, which are both EU members but not NATO members.

“This is a possibility that is now being studied and can be called a compromise,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, implying Ukraine could be permitted to keep a smaller, non-aligned military force.

Russia’s hostility stems from a desire to join NATO.

If Ukraine joins the Western-led 30-nation military alliance, Moscow feels it will become a menace on its western borders.

The talks got a boost this week when Zelenskyy admitted that, despite being a vital goal, Ukraine could not reasonably hope to join NATO. Lavrov praised the remark, saying it ‘gives hope that we may reach an agreement on this problem.’

NATO has announced it will encourage member country military chiefs to identify more methods to help Ukraine, after debating whether or not to expedite Ukraine’s application.

However, a breakthrough in peace talks is still a long way off, considering that Russian forces continue to bombard Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, with Reuters reporting today that buildings in residential areas have been destroyed as a result of the recent strikes.

Russia continues to hammer the port city of Mariupol, trapping hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom lack access to running water or electricity.

Vladimir Putin has stated that he will not send his troops home until Ukraine has stopped fighting, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that any peace deal must include a complete withdrawal of invading troops.

According to the United Nations, nearly three million people have become refugees as a result of Russia’s war, with hundreds of thousands probably killed.

Ukraine has accused Russia of purposefully targeting civilians and medical staff, which is illegal under international law, but Russia denies the allegations.

In a rare show of bipartisanship, senators of the US Senate labeled Putin a “war criminal” this week. He would face charges for “atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people,” according to a unanimous decision.
