Ukraine alleges that Russian troops stole five grain-laden ships

Published

on

On March 21, Ukraine accused Russia of stealing five grain-laden ships from the Berdyansk port. According to Oleksandr Starukh, governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the stolen ships were carrying tens of thousands of tonnes of grain, according to a televised interview with the Ukrinform news agency on March 21. Russian tugboats, according to eyewitnesses, seized the ships.

“Residents of Berdyansk report that there were five ships at the harbour,” Starukh told Ukrinform. Some were filled, as evidenced by the customs documentation, while others were just half-laden. These ships vanished from Berdyansk’s harbour just a few days ago. They were reportedly chased away by Russian tugboats. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Ukrainian grain were stored there.”

He went on to warn that the ships’ exact position will be disclosed soon. According to local media outlets, the enemy has briefly gained control of Berdyansk. In addition, Ukraine rejected Russian proposals on Monday to hand up the port city of Mariupol, where civilians are besieged and heavy combat continues.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine

Russian forces had asked for Ukrainian soldiers to depart the city through humanitarian corridors established up for inhabitants. Kyiv, on the other hand, quickly rejected the idea, even ahead of Moscow’s deadline. Russian Col Gen Mikhail Mizintsev ordered Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their guns on Sunday, promising “a safe departure from Mariupol.”

“There can be no talk about capitulation and putting down weaponry,” Ukraine said quickly. Mariupol Mayor Piotr Andryushchenko, too, promptly declined the idea, stating that he didn’t have time to respond until the morning deadline.

Furthermore, in a video statement broadcast early Monday morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the Russian bombing of an art school in Mariupol. He claimed that when the school was attacked, up to 400 residents sought safety there. “They are under the debris, and we don’t know how many of them have survived,” Zelenskyy told the Associated Press.

In addition, the White House confirmed on March 20 that US Vice President Joe Biden will visit Poland. The trip is part of a week-long trip to Europe, where he will meet with NATO and European allies to discuss the Ukraine crisis.
