TMC MLA faces a seven-day campaign ban by the EC

Published

on

The TMC suffered a major setback before the Asansol by-election when Pandabeswar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty was banned from campaigning for threatening BJP voters by the Election Commission of India. On Tuesday, Chakraborty came under criticism after he was overheard encouraging TMC workers to frighten hardline BJP members to keep them from voting in the elections. A BJP team led by Sukanta Majumdar, the party’s West Bengal unit chief, met with Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Arora and demanded that the TMC legislator be prosecuted.

Chakraborty had issued an immediate response rejecting the allegations made against him, according to the EC’s order. The poll board censured the TMC MLA for breaking provisions of the Model Code of Conduct, the Representation of the People Act, and the Indian Penal Code, claiming that his words have the potential to interfere with electors’ free exercise of their voting rights. Thus, from 10 a.m. on March 30 until 8 p.m. on April 6, the Pandabeswar legislator was forbidden from holding any public gatherings, processions, roadshows, or interviews in connection with the by-election.

The following are the controversial remarks made by the TMC MLA: ” “Tell them that if they go to vote, it will be assumed that they will vote for the BJP and that where they live after the vote will be at risk. And if you don’t vote, we’ll assume you’ve voted for us, and you’re free to live and work wherever you choose as long as we’re with you. Is everything clear?”

‘Vintage footage’

West Bengal TMC deputy president Jay Prakash Majumdar told the sources that the footage in which Narendranath Chakraborty was caught threatening BJP voters was old. He further claimed that the EC decided without hearing the TMC MLA, which was disputed by the poll body’s order. Majumdar further said that BJP’s Asansol candidate Agnimitra Paul had publicly told TMC activists that they would be beaten up if they filed her nomination papers. The Asansol Lok Sabha seat, which became vacant owing to Babul Supriyo’s resignation, will be voted for on April 12.

Jay Prakash Majumdar, WB TMC vice president, stated, “Our MLA claims that this is an old film that the BJP has released and that they have filed a complaint with the Election Commission using it as evidence. Interestingly, the Election Commission did not issue a show cause (notice) or inquire about his version of events. They just heard one side of the story and did not verify the video’s veracity. Whatever warning they’ve given us, we’ll abide by it.”
