The Threat Of Extinction Is Near For Lotus Lake

Published

The Lotus Lake of Navi Mumbai is on the brink of extinction.

The Lake

The calm Lotus Lake in Sector 27 of Seawoods, Nerul, which was once full of colourful lotus blooms, is now in danger of disappearing entirely due to continuous trash dumping. Environmentalists and locals alike are becoming more concerned about the slow degradation of this once-thriving ecosystem, leading to calls for immediate action to protect this priceless natural resource.

In addition to destroying Lotus Lake’s natural beauty, the unrelenting dumping of rubbish into it has upset its fragile ecology and caused irreparable harm. Neglecting this waterbody threatens its existence even though it is an important source of biodiversity and a refuge for native plants and animals.

Concerned residents voice their dismay at the worrying situation and draw attention to CIDCO’s and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) constitutional duties to protect the city’s natural lakes. The state of Lotus Lake has gotten worse due to the willful destruction of wetlands and green areas in favor of development projects, which is a worrying trend of environmental deterioration.

The lake faces more difficulties because of unapproved activities, including as the growth of exotic species like hornets, even though the Bombay High Court has ordered that the lake’s biological integrity be preserved. The situation has only become worse due to the disregard for the law shown by CIDCO and local government officials, which has led to concerns of permanent harm if prompt action is not done.

The Conscious Citizens Navi Mumbai Forum’s Sudhir Dani calls for immediate action to address the problem. “To restore the Lake, immediate action is required, including clearing up trash, rubbish, and encroaching vegetation. In addition, the construction of a designated walking path and a protective barrier surrounding the lake are intended to deter future efforts by land speculators to expand.
