Ticketless passengers were caught by NMMT in Navi Mumbai.

The Evaders

The management of Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has stepped up its efforts to stop people riding its bus system without a ticket. Authorities found 2,142 free passengers between January and August 2024; as a result, fines of Rs. 3,91,383 were assessed.

Passengers are expected to buy tickets as air-conditioned buses are presently running on all routes in Navi Mumbai. A substantial fine of Rs. 300 is imposed on anybody found to be travelling without a ticket.

In addition to Navi Mumbai, NMMT also has activities in Thane, Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli, and Panvel. Buses on these routes are frequently packed during rush hour, and many riders choose to avoid having their tickets checked by getting off at the stops without paying. The NMMT has suffered large financial losses as a result of this.

The NMMT has sent out 35 ticket inspectors to deal with this problem; their job is to find and punish fare evaders. Even at night, these inspectors are placed in strategic locations at busy bus stops. The organization used to just check tickets twice, but in an effort to discourage people from flying without tickets, the number of checks has been raised to five or six.

Data over the last few years show the following alarming trend:

A total of Rs. 5,72,663 was penalized to 4,237 fee evaders in 2021 after ticket checks revealed 32,21,271 passengers.

10,738 free passengers were fined Rs. 5,98,175 in 2022 after legal action was initiated against them.

3,578 passengers who did not have tickets cost the NMMT Rs. 6,31,114 in fines in 2023.
