The former CEO of Intel India was slain by the taxi driver, claimed he lost control of the vehicle while he was asleep

According to an official on Friday, the driver of the taxi that struck and killed former Intel India country head Avtar Saini in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, fell asleep at the wheel since he had been driving all night.

Following the incident that happened on Wednesday at approximately 5.50 am on Palm Beach Road in the Nerul neighborhood of Navi Mumbai, the police have filed a complaint against the driver, 23-year-old Rishikesh Khade.

Saini was riding when he was struck by a speeding taxi. After the cab struck Saini’s bicycle from behind, Khade attempted to flee the scene, trying to get the bike’s frame out from beneath the vehicle’s front wheels. After Saini’s friends hurried him to the hospital, the authorities reported that he was pronounced dead there.

According to an NRI police station officer, “Khade told the police during his interrogation that he didzed off as he was driving all night, due to which he lost control over the cab that knocked down Saini’s bicycle,” sources added.

In addition to provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, Khade was charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by doing an act rashly or negligently so as to endanger human life), and 304-A (causing death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide).

According to sources, a police officer stated, “But the accused has not been arrested so far because the maximum imprisonment for sections applied against him is less than seven years.” Saini, a Mumbai suburb living in Chembur, was acknowledged as having contributed to the development of the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors. He then oversaw the Pentium CPU design for the business.

According to the police, Saini’s family is traveling to India for his last ceremonies and is residing overseas, therefore they are waiting for them to collect his corpse.

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Navi Mumbai Police arrested Jeorge Ocante DaSilva, a 35-year-old native of Guinea, on Monday for possessing 410 grams of cocaine, allegedly intended for illegal sale. Acting on a tip-off, API Alka Patil of the AHTU led a raid at RM Heights Building in Ulwe, where DaSilva was found in possession of the narcotics.

Around 2:30 p.m. on October 28, officers discovered 410 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately Rs 1,02,50,000, hidden in DaSilva’s bedroom. Authorities also seized a mobile phone, a black Tabata weighing scale, scissors, plastic packaging bags, and a sky bag, bringing the total seizure value to Rs 1,02,55,610.

An FIR was filed at Panvel City Police Station under Sections 8(a) and 21(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Dasilva was presented in court and remanded to police custody until October 31, 2024. Investigations are ongoing, with the Crime Branch seeking potential accomplices and sources of the narcotics. Notably, Dasilva has a prior NDPS case registered at Nahar Police Station in Mumbai.
