The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started a campaign to block the places that are subject to theft and identify illicit connections at the ward level in response to harsh criticism over the city’s water issue and to guarantee consistent supply in all nodes. The nodal teams have been directed to penalise and/or terminate any unauthorized connections right away. For the past two months, people in different areas have been complaining about water problems, and the civic body has been unable to resolve the issue.

According to NMMC authorities, the latest move will undoubtedly assist increase supplies in the areas that have been experiencing inconsistent delivery. Unauthorized pipes connecting Digha and Belapur will be located, according to NMMC, to guarantee a steady water supply for the city. “This is to enforce restrictions on unauthorized water connections in order to preserve supply balance. The engineering department and the water supply wing met and made the decision. We had located and unplugged up to 422 unauthorized taps the previous year. Unless all of the unauthorized connections are cut, the drive will go on, an official stated.

In the meanwhile, a public announcement system was activated to alert locals about impending action against people who had connected water lines illegally, and officials conducted a round to confirm the linked meters. Residents’ ongoing concerns about water scarcity in different regions of the city made NMMC realize that the problem of illegal water hook-ups, which made matters worse, needed to be addressed. Concerns have increased due to complaints of interrupted water supplies, especially in Zone II of the city, which includes the nodes of Digha, Vashi, Ghansoli, and Koparkhairane. An intensive search was launched on Monday to locate and cut off illicit pipelines.

An activist named Rajeev Mishra said that there is a spike in the number of unauthorized connections in different areas due to widespread unpermitted building. He went on to say that if the offenders are not apprehended right away, the issue will get worse.
