The Declaration Of The State Environment Department Does Not Include Nerul Lotus Lake As A Wetland
The recent claim by the Maharashtra State Environment and Climate Control Department that Nerul Lotus Lake is not a wetland has angered environmental groups and environmentalists. The revelation, which was included in a document that was filed with the Bombay High Court, has sparked debate among environmentalists who have long supported the preservation of the Lotus Lake habitat.
The affidavit makes no reference of Lotus Lake in Sector 27, Nerul, as a wetland and solely names the “Jewel of Navi Mumbai,” the only confirmed wetland in Navi Mumbai. Outrage has been generated by this exclusion, particularly in light of the contradicting evidence included in the affidavit.
Citing an earlier report to the government, the Thane District Collect rate’s submission recognizes Lotus Lake as a potential wetland; however, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has objected, arguing that Lotus Lake is not a wetland based on documentation and remote sensing data.
The environmental community has fiercely denounced this omission, claiming Lotus Lake is a wetland and refuting CIDCO’s concerns. Prominent Save Lotus Lake campaigner Sunil Agarwal expressed surprise that the affidavit disregarded accepted wetland conservation practices, such as Supreme Court orders and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) instructions.
The statements made in the affidavit will be contested by advocate Pradeep Patole, who has been spearheading a legal fight in the Bombay High Court to conserve Lotus Lake through a Public Interest Litigation. He underlines that lakes are intrinsically protected under the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017 and affirmed by court rulings after they are confirmed as wetlands by the appropriate authorities.
The survival of Lotus Lake and its crucial significance in Navi Mumbai’s coastal environment are major concerns. The region’s ability to prevent flooding and withstand the monsoon is seriously threatened by expansion and commercial exploitation, according to environmentalists, if its wetland classification is disregarded.
Environmental activists are planning to bring this worrying development to the Chief Minister’s notice and ask for action to protect wetlands and stop their needless destruction. They implore the CM to give careful consideration to comprehending the conditions on the ground and making sure that no wetland is forfeited in the name of expediency or development objectives.
