On February 23, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hosted a ceremony to honor the outstanding accomplishments of kids in the dry waste bank program in remembrance of Sant Gadgebaba Jayanti, who is well-known for his promotion of cleanliness. The ceremony, which was organized by the Solid Waste Management Department and Swachh Maharashtra Abhiyan, honored the commitment and accomplishments of over 300 children who demonstrated exceptional performance in this cutting-edge initiative.

With the school-level dry waste bank program, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation—which is dedicated to leading the way in novel methods to cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Mission—has gained a lot of traction. This program has not only helped students develop a feeling of accountability for reducing trash, but it has also promoted an environmentally conscious culture.

Instead of throwing away items like tetra packs, bottles, wrappers, and sachets as dry waste, students are encouraged by the dry waste bank project to gather them from their homes and place them in designated containers at school. Based on the amount of rubbish collected, participants get points, and top-performing pupils are awarded prizes and school supplies. To encourage responsibility and involvement, teachers keep their passbooks neat and organized, documenting the efforts of their pupils. With 15 schools in the Belapur, Nerul, and Vashi divisions now running the program, 2771 pupils have been involved.

The winners received praise for their excellent work from Dr. Babasaheb Rajale, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department and NMMC Nodal Officer of the Swachh Bharat Mission. He emphasized the significance of their achievements in motivating their colleagues. In accordance with the civic chief’s orders, Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar declared that the program will be extended to all schools in the next academic year.

Generous donations of educational materials were made possible by the Suryodaya Finance Bank’s CSR fund. Important dignitaries such as Deputy Commissioners of Circle 1 Somnath Potre, Jayant Javadekar, and Shashikant Tandel were present at the event. Other attendees included bank representatives, teachers, students, and parents, as well as representatives from the municipal corporation.
