One of India’s top providers of renewable energy, Sunsure Energy, has started delivering renewable electricity to Sandoz, the world’s largest manufacturer of generic and biosimilar pharmaceuticals, at its manufacturing site in Navi Mumbai. Part of the solar open access electricity Purchase Agreement (PPA) that the two firms inked last year is this electricity supply from Sunsure’s Solapur facility. With an annual supply of more than 32 GWh of green energy, Sandoz Group is able to cut its direct emissions by 11%.

This historic project will allow Sandoz to save 26,000 tons of CO2 per year and represents a major advancement in the company’s decarbonization efforts. The Sandoz Group will cut its overall direct emissions by 11% by converting its Navi Mumbai production plant to green energy. In keeping with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, Sandoz has also sent a Commitment Letter to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) outlining its commitment to sustainability and setting science-based targets for reducing carbon emissions. An annual 32 GWh of renewable electricity from Sunsure will be provided to Sandoz, sufficient to power 7,000 houses in India.

“The efficient use of resources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are key issues for Sandoz,” stated Sudhir Bhandare, Executive Director of Sandoz India, during the inaugural ceremony to mark the start of deliveries from the Solapur factory. Therefore, the project’s provision of renewable energy is a perfect fit for our environmental goals.
Sunsure started providing power about two months earlier than expected.

“Supporting Sandoz in its gradual transition to green energy is an important project for Sunsure and we are delighted that we could make it happen before committed timelines,” stated Shashank Sharma, Founder & CEO of Sunsure Energy. This project demonstrates Sunsure’s commitment to Maharashtra, a state that has led the way in the use of renewable power during the previous ten years.
