NMMC issues SOP to curb noise & air pollution at construction sites.

The SOP

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has released a thorough Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) targeted at reducing these environmental consequences in response to an increase in complaints over noise and air pollution brought on by current construction and redevelopment projects. The SOP is currently accessible on the NMMC website, along with a comprehensive circular.

The action was taken in response to a Suo Motu PIL (No. 3/2023) that the Bombay High Court filed, emphasizing how vital it is to combat air pollution. The December 11, 2023, court ruling stipulated specific actions to lower pollutant levels. In response, Mr. Shirish Aardwad and Additional Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde organized a group of specialists to draft the SOP.

Strict restrictions are outlined in the SOP for contractors, developers, and owners of building permits who work in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation region. It focuses on ways to reduce noise and air pollution, especially while blasting and excavating multi-room basements. On July 26, 2024, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Kailas Shinde authorized the recommendations; on August 1, 2024, they were formally sanctioned.

A task team that will keep an eye on current construction work has been created to guarantee compliance. The Director of Urban Planning, Mr. Somnath Kekan, must receive weekly updates from Local Divisional Officers about the progress of these projects. With the Commissioner’s prior approval, any violations of the SOP will give rise to legal action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act of 1949 and the Maharashtra Urban Planning Act of 1966.

“Reducing the likelihood of accidents at construction sites and reducing noise and air pollution are top priorities for the NMMC. Dr. Shinde said, “For more information, citizens are recommended to consult the comprehensive circular accessible on the NMMC website.
