The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a substantial crackdown to prevent the usage of single-use plastic bags, which has resulted in the confiscation of 53 kg of such bags and the collecting of penalties totaling Rs. 1.60 lakh. This programme, which is being overseen by Dr. Babasaheb Rajale, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, is a component of a broad push to decrease the use of plastic throughout the whole NMMC region.

Officials found 28 stores and institutions during the investigation that were utilising or storing plastic bags and other illegal plastics. Due to this, 53 kg of plastic bags and banned polymers were seized, along with fines totaling Rs. 1.60 lakh.

Targeted activities were carried out in several wards of the municipal corporation, according to Dr. Babasaheb Rajale. Six business owners in the Belapur district were fined a combined Rs. 30,000 and four kilogrammes of illegal plastic were seized. Similar penalties of Rs. 65,000 were imposed on eleven store owners in the Vashi district, and 15 kilogrammes of prohibited plastic were confiscated. Five business owners in the Turbe district were given fines of Rs. 25,000, which led to the seizure of 22 kilogrammes of prohibited plastic. Six business owners in the Koparkhairane region were fined Rs. 40,000 and had two kilogrammes of illegal plastic confiscated. Notably, a sizable number of plastic bags were among the goods seized.

Rajesh Narvekar, the commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, emphasised the dangers that plastic poses to the environment and the pressing need to solve the problem. He emphasised the rigorous penal actions being taken against anyone discovered using illegal plastics, with a special focus on plastic bags, and the active promotion of public awareness programmes against single-use plastics by NMMC. This action serves as a potent reminder of the municipality’s dedication to providing its citizens with a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
