Ganesh Naik leads official inauguration as parties trade charges; calls made to withdraw case against Amit Thackeray.

The Inauguration

The much-debated equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj near the Rajiv Gandhi Flyover in Sector 1, Nerul, was officially unveiled on November 21 by Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, ending nearly five months of political tension and public speculation. The statue, which had remained covered, became a flashpoint between the MNS, rival Shiv Sena factions, and local leaders.

During the ceremony, Naik appealed to the police to withdraw the case lodged against MNS leader Amit Thackeray, stating that his earlier unauthorised unveiling attempt stemmed from public emotions rather than intent to violate the law. He said he had urged the Police Commissioner to retract the complaint to help maintain political harmony in Navi Mumbai.

The controversy escalated on November 16 when Thackeray, during a city visit, led a march of MNS workers and conducted an impromptu unveiling without official permission. The incident drew a large crowd, resulting in clashes and disruption. Following this, Nerul Police booked Thackeray, along with several party workers, on charges including unlawful assembly, assault on police, and damage to public property. Thackeray, who refused to accept the police notice, was expected to appear on November 21, but the visit has now been postponed to November 23.

In an unexpected development, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde skipped the event despite being scheduled as chief guest. Meanwhile, MP Naresh Mhaske criticised the political tug-of-war, stressing that Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy should unite, not divide, the community.
