NMMC Launches Advanced Microbiology Lab at Nerul’s Meenatai Thackeray Hospital
Rs 80-lakh CSR-funded facility to boost infectious disease diagnosis and early outbreak detection.
The Launch
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art microbiology laboratory at the Maasaheb Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul, significantly enhancing the city’s diagnostic capabilities. The lab, located on the hospital’s second floor, has been established at a cost of around Rs 80 lakh through CSR support from the Aditya Birla Foundation in collaboration with Pride India.
Equipped with advanced systems for detecting bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, the new facility is expected to provide faster and more accurate diagnosis of infectious diseases. Officials said the lab will play a crucial role in ensuring timely and appropriate antibiotic treatment while also strengthening public health surveillance by enabling early detection of disease outbreaks, particularly seasonal surges.
The laboratory offers a wide range of diagnostic tests, including blood culture and sensitivity, sputum, urine, stool, body-fluid and fungal cultures. It is also equipped to conduct RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 and swine flu, along with ELISA tests for HIV, HCV and HBsAg, significantly broadening the hospital’s diagnostic portfolio.
Maharashtra Minister Ganesh Naik and NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde inspected the facility during the inauguration and hailed it as a major step toward improving healthcare services in Navi Mumbai. With the addition of this advanced lab, NMMC aims to enhance its preparedness and response to infectious diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes across the region.
