BJP Belapur MLA Shreemati Manda Mhatre has demanded to restart the  halted Belapur Fort conservation work.

The Conservation work

MLA Shreemati Manda Mhatre from the Belapur assembly constituency has expressed concern during the ongoing winter session in Nagpur on the halting of conservation activities at the historically significant Navi Mumbai Belapur Fort. Shreemati Manda Mhatre has urged the parliament to take urgent action and direct the Archaeology Department to immediately begin the vital conservation work again.

Situated on a hilltop with a commanding view of the Belapur creek is the Navi Mumbai – Belapur Fort, a monument of Portuguese architectural significance. Chimaji Appa constructed the fort, which has a long history in Maharashtra. It began as a sea route monitoring point before becoming a Navi Mumbai cultural landmark.

For the Belapur Fort, CIDCO had launched an ambitious Rs. 18 crore beautification and conservation project that included a number of developmental tasks like fortification reinforcement, building new stone steps, restoring the fort tower, and revitalizing vital amenities like the parking lot, food mall, amphitheatre, and cafeteria. Sadly, political interference resulted in the project’s suspension, impeding the all-encompassing efforts.

In addition to the harm incurred during the monsoon, the unfinished work experienced additional damage as a result of heavy downpours, highlighting the urgent necessity of starting the conservation efforts anew in order to preserve this historical treasure. Shreemati Manda Mhatre emphasized the critical need to preserve the Belapur Fort, highlighting its significance as a cultural asset that profoundly shapes the identity of the people who live in Navi Mumbai as well as a historical landmark. She asked the assembly to step in and order the Department of Archaeology to accelerate the restoration process.
