Residents in Hsg societies need assistance from NMMC since they lack garbage cans

Published

In order to accomplish a 100 percent household waste segregation mechanism at source, the residents of the NMMC region have been requesting that the civic body provide them with a suitable quantity of trash cans. However, in order to make regular collection less of a bother, the NMMC has been encouraging the housing societies to install trash cans on their own. The lack of suitable infrastructure for collection, such as the absence of trash cans in many housing societies throughout the city, is one of the main issues with waste management.

People living there claim that despite the installation of pricey stainless steel garbage cans in pairs of two, one for dry waste and the other for wet waste, along pedestrian walkways that are barely utilised, housing societies are still unable to obtain one. The NMMC stated that it is the responsibility of societies to build separate trash cans for dry and moist waste. “We’ve instructed housing associations to set up the trash cans on their own. Providing the trash cans on a regular basis adds to our workload and strains the municipal budget, according to Dr. Babasaheb Rajale, deputy municipal commissioner for solid waste at NMMC.

Residents have been urging NMMC to get extra trash cans for the societies, and the organisation is planning to do just that. “While we have urged societies to set up their own bins, we will provide them with the same for those who don’t have one,” Rajale continued. It will, however, take some time. Garbage collection has been a disaster for years, according to Vashi resident Bhavna Bhatia. Waste is littered all over the roadways and bins are overflowing, which is dangerous. Because collection is at the whim of civic contractors, trash ends up on the sidewalks and in the streets. Although NMMC portrays itself as the cleanest city, this is not the case. NMMC officials are seen on their toes to quickly conduct special drives when the Swachh team visits to review the city’s cleanliness index, and after it’s done, the cleanliness activity is put on hold.
