NMMC Commissioner urges residents to celebrate plastic-free Ganeshotsav.

The Measures

This year’s Ganeshotsav celebrations will include a number of initiatives announced by Dr. Kailas Shinde, Commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), aimed at encouraging environmental sustainability. The Commissioner has asked people to support the ‘Plastic-Free Ganeshotsav’ effort by choosing Shadu (clay) idols instead of Plaster of Paris, limiting the height of the idols, and protecting natural water sources by immersing them in manmade ponds.

The request is made as the city prepares for September 7th, the start of Ganeshotsav. A preliminary meeting was facilitated by the Commissioner at the Municipal Headquarters’ Gyan Kendra. Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, City Engineer Shirish Aardwad, and other department heads and executives attended the meeting.

In addition to stressing the value of enjoying the celebration sustainably, Dr. Shinde said that the Municipal Corporation will cover the cost of mandap permits. The city’s Ganeshotsav mandals have overwhelmingly praised this choice.

Mandal leaders were encouraged by Additional Commissioner Shri. Sunil Pawar to adhere to appropriate preparation and procedures for the celebration. Officials from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board also gave advice on eco-friendly techniques during the program. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s “e-service computer system” for mandap permits was urged to be used by Ganeshotsav mandals in order to expedite the procedure and guarantee timely approvals.

In order to ensure that celebrations go off without a hitch, the Commissioner also emphasized the necessity of moving quickly to solve infrastructure-related concerns, such as road upkeep and traffic control. A special provision for power, portable restrooms, and drinking water will be provided at bus stops in light of the large number of visitors visiting Konkan during the event.

The Municipal Corporation will use a variety of media outlets to release a list of geotagged locations for both natural and artificial immersion in order to further promote the project. Dr. Shinde recommended people to plan an eco-friendly party rather than utilizing plastic and thermocol decorations.

Dr. Shinde emphasized in his closing remarks that everyone has a shared duty to safeguard the environment and urged everyone to help create a greener Ganeshotsav.
