Power Theft: MSEDCL Takes Strict Action

Maharashtra State energy Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL) has begun filing proceedings against 129 people who were found guilty of power theft and unlawful energy consumption in an effort to stop these wrongdoings. Aiming to solve the problem of excessive power loss in Ghansoli, the project was directed by Sunil Kakade, the Chief Engineer of Bhandup Parimandal.

The campaign saw collaboration between Vashi Division and Nerul Division and was carried out under the direction of Superintending Engineer Vashi Mandal, Sinhajirao Gaikwad. Under Section 135 throughout the campaign, 146 instances totaling about Rs. 77 lakhs were revealed. Furthermore, 26 instances of unlawful use of electricity that were classified as violating Section 126 were found. Consequently, a penalty sum of almost Rs. 12.95 lakhs was paid towards power bills. During the campaign, 175 incidents of energy theft and unlawful consumption totaling Rs. 90 lakhs were brought to light.

The law stipulates that customers who steal power for the first time may choose to pay the compound interest amount in addition to their electricity bill. Out of the 146 incidents found in Ghansoli, 129 customers did not adhere to these requirements. Subsequently, Sunil Sarode, Assistant Engineer, Ghansoli Branch, filed First Information Reports (FIRs) at Vashi Police Station against these users under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003.

Superintending Engineer Sinhajirao Gaikwad, Executive Engineer Mohod of the Vashi Division, Assistant Executive Engineer Gofne of the Airoli Sub-Division, Assistant Executive Engineer Kasal of the Vashi Division, Assistant Engineer Sunil Sarode of the Nerul Division, and other members of the Vashi Divisions contributed to the mission’s success. It was notably noteworthy that so many women engineers contributed to this endeavor.

Since the Khopte Bridge is an essential connection between different areas of the local community, it has grown to be a significant source of worry.

The bridge has been in operation since its 1995 opening without a formal inauguration. Its recurrent degradation can be attributed to the fact that it was built to transport huge container vehicles.

The Public Works Department in Uran’s Additional Engineer, Naresh Pawar, attested that inspections had been carried out and that the repair’s tender procedure is now under progress. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a 100-day action plan, conceptualized by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to enhance municipal services and improve citizens’ quality of life. NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed all departments to implement the plan efficiently.

A key focus of the initiative is maintaining cleanliness in municipal offices by disposing of old materials, organizing documents, and improving facilities. Dr. Shinde has also emphasized the importance of providing basic amenities such as clean drinking water, well-maintained restrooms, waiting rooms, and clear directional signboards.

To improve digital services, Dr. Shinde has stressed the need for an updated and user-friendly NMMC website, ensuring easy access to services. He also called for strict compliance with the Right to Information Act, 2005, and the Public Service Rights Act, 2015, to enhance transparency.

Efforts are being made to strengthen the Grievance Redressal System, with a goal of zero pending complaints. Officers have been asked to set aside specific hours for citizen interactions, ensuring accessibility.

Dr. Shinde has also instructed regular inspections of municipal offices and public facilities, including schools, hospitals, markets, and public toilets, to ensure they meet public needs. He has urged better organization of Democracy Day, held on the first Monday of each month, to address citizen concerns more effectively.

With this action plan, NMMC aims to provide faster, more efficient services and improve overall governance in Navi Mumbai.
