NMMC Warns CIDCO Over Pollution at Major Housing Project Sites

Published

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued a strong warning notice to CIDCO over alleged pollution caused by large-scale construction activities at housing project sites in the city. The civic body has directed CIDCO to take immediate corrective measures within seven days, failing which work at the affected sites may be stopped.

According to NMMC officials, a recent inspection revealed serious violations of air and noise pollution norms at housing projects being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The sites identified include areas near Vashi Sector 19 and Juinagar, where construction activity has allegedly led to excessive dust, inadequate safety barriers, and poor pollution-control arrangements.

The civic body noted that mandatory pollution-control measures, such as regular water sprinkling, covering of construction materials, and dust suppression systems, were either insufficient or completely absent. NMMC also stated that court guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) meant to control construction-related pollution were not being followed by CIDCO-appointed contractors.

In its notice, the corporation has demanded a detailed action plan from CIDCO, outlining steps to reduce pollution and ensure compliance with environmental norms. Officials warned that non-compliance could lead to strict action, including suspension of construction work.

The warning comes at a time when concerns over worsening air quality in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are increasing. NMMC officials said the civic body is committed to protecting public health and will take firm action against agencies that fail to adhere to environmental regulations, even if they are government bodies.

CIDCO is yet to issue an official response to the notice.
