NMMC Takes Action Against Single-Use Plastic

A two day single use plastic crackdown was conducted by NMMC in Navi Mumbai.

The Action

Following a successful two-day campaign against single-use plastic, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) was able to seize 28.7 kg of plastic and collect penalties of Rs 90,000.

To successfully combat the use of single-use plastic, strict preventative measures have been implemented in conjunction with widespread public awareness efforts, as directed by the Municipal Commissioner and other agencies. This strategy has been vigorously pursued by six departments, with enforcement operations throughout all departmental regions being overseen by local sanitation officers and inspectors.

Spot checks throughout ward areas on March 26 and 27, 2024, resulted in fines and the seizure of single-use plastic. The operation had noteworthy outcomes, including the seizure of 28.7 kg of single-use plastic and the collection of fines of Rs 90,000.

Various professions and establishments in different Navi Mumbai divisions were the targets of legal action. Penalties of Rs 20,000 were levied in the Belapur district, and seven kilos of plastic were confiscated. In a similar vein, Nerul Division assessed fines of Rs. 10,000 and seized four kg of single-use plastic.

Penalties of Rs 15,000 were issued on the Vashi division, and three kilos of plastic were seized. In Turbhe Division, 8 kg of single-use plastic stock was seized along with penalties of Rs 15, 000. Two divisions, Koparkhairane and Ghansoli, seized 2.5 kg and 1 kg of plastic, respectively, and fined Rs 10,000 each.

Furthermore, the Airoli division levied fines of Rs. 10,000 in addition to seizing 2.3 kg of plastic stock. In addition, the Circle 2 flying squad confiscated 900 kilos of single-use plastic and fined one merchant Rs. 5,000 for it.

A total of Rs. 90,000 in penalties have been collected, and 18 businesses/establishments have had 28.7 kg of single-use plastic waste seized. In order to promote a cleaner and greener environment, the NMMC calls on residents to fully refrain from using single-use plastic and reiterates its commitment to carrying out such initiatives.

Navi Mumbai Police Arrest African National With Rs 1 Crore Worth Of Cocaine In Ulwe

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Navi Mumbai Police arrested Jeorge Ocante DaSilva, a 35-year-old native of Guinea, on Monday for possessing 410 grams of cocaine, allegedly intended for illegal sale. Acting on a tip-off, API Alka Patil of the AHTU led a raid at RM Heights Building in Ulwe, where DaSilva was found in possession of the narcotics.

Around 2:30 p.m. on October 28, officers discovered 410 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately Rs 1,02,50,000, hidden in DaSilva’s bedroom. Authorities also seized a mobile phone, a black Tabata weighing scale, scissors, plastic packaging bags, and a sky bag, bringing the total seizure value to Rs 1,02,55,610.

An FIR was filed at Panvel City Police Station under Sections 8(a) and 21(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Dasilva was presented in court and remanded to police custody until October 31, 2024. Investigations are ongoing, with the Crime Branch seeking potential accomplices and sources of the narcotics. Notably, Dasilva has a prior NDPS case registered at Nahar Police Station in Mumbai.
