NMMC Issues Notices to 79 Employees for Absence from Election Duty
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued show-cause notices to 79 officers and employees who failed to report for their assigned election duty, officials said on Tuesday. The action comes as the civic body intensifies preparations for the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for January 15.
According to NMMC officials, duty orders had been formally issued to staff deployed across 1,151 polling stations in 28 wards. Despite clear instructions, 79 personnel remained absent from their designated polling locations, creating gaps in election preparedness.
The civic administration has directed the absentees to report within 24 hours of receiving the notice and provide an explanation for their absence. Failure to comply, officials warned, will result in legal action, including the filing of complaints at local police stations.
NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde stated that such absenteeism disrupts election arrangements and could affect the smooth conduct of the polling process. He emphasized that election duty is mandatory and that strict action will be taken against staff who neglect their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, election-related activities are underway across the city. While thousands of nomination forms have been distributed to prospective candidates, only one nomination had been filed by the third day of the nomination period, officials noted.
The NMMC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly election and has appealed to all assigned personnel to cooperate fully. Authorities said additional monitoring measures are being put in place to prevent further lapses and to ensure adequate staffing at all polling stations on election day.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Cigarette Sales to Students
Seawoods residents seek strict action against tobacco sales near educational institutions and public spaces.
The Cigarette Sales
Residents of Sector 25, Seawoods, Nerul, have raised concerns over students allegedly smoking in public places and the suspected sale of cigarettes to minors.
Following repeated complaints, the ward officer and local police conducted a raid at a paan shop on the ground floor of Ambika Heights on the night of September 11. Officials reportedly found cigarette cartons at the shop, but no other illegal intoxicating substances.
Residents said students, reportedly aged between 17 and 22, are frequently seen smoking near Seawoods railway station, the bridge and other public areas. They suspect that a local paan shop may be supplying cigarettes to college students. Prakash Yawalkar, president of the Seawoods Citizens Welfare Association, said students were openly smoking outside the shop, raising concerns among residents and parents.
The association has submitted complaints to the local police, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, mayor, local representatives and the Drug Department. It has urged authorities to strictly enforce the law prohibiting tobacco sales to minors and increase monitoring around schools, colleges and other student gathering points.
Residents said stronger action is needed to prevent tobacco use among young people and ensure that public spaces remain safe and healthy.
