Leading the way in strategic water planning is the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), working under the direction of seasoned water supply industry specialists. The municipal corporation, headed by Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, is renowned for its Morbe Dam Project, a pillar of Navi Mumbai’s water-rich legacy. However, it is currently concentrating on forward-thinking projects.

Experts from the water supply industry gathered in a specialist committee at a recent milestone meeting to investigate potential new water sources for Navi Mumbai’s future needs. In its second session, this assembly carefully went over the minutes from its first meeting in June 2023, sharing insightful observations made by its participants. Discussions included the state of the water supply in NMMC at the moment, estimates for the future that take population expansion into account, and a range of opinions from committee members. Commissioner Narvekar presented important data, highlighting the close connection between the growth of NMMC, the population boom, and the incorporation of 14 villages into the future metropolitan environment. The changing topography of Thane district and its effect on the amount of water needed to support the growing population were also taken into account.

It was a crucial conversation on the possibility that CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation), the organization in charge of planned urban development, would draft a joint proposal for Navi Mumbai, Panvel Municipal Corporation, and other areas that CIDCO has created. In order to guarantee a sustainable water supply, the conference emphasized the necessity of investigating everlasting water sources. Together, CIDCO, Panvel Municipal Corporation, and NMMC investigated the possibility of submitting a combined proposal to the government for the hydroelectric project at Bhira, which would divert water from the Kundalika River.

The meeting, which was presided over by Municipal Commissioner Narvekar, had prominent attendees including Additional City Engineer Manoj Patil and City Engineer Sanjay Desai, as well as seasoned committee members. The dedication to comprehensive water planning was reinforced by the collaborative character of the endeavor, which included specialists from respected universities such as V.J.T.I. and I.I.T., as well as online involvement from retiring Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, S.H. Waghmare.
