Navi Mumbai Malayalees have been busy scheduling the “Sadhya” at several south Indian restaurants in Navi Mumbai that serve the same and purchasing the ingredients to create one at home as they get ready to celebrate the long-awaited Kerala state festival, Onam, this weekend.

For “Onam Sadhya,” most of them in Navi Mumbai choose to visit Kerala Bhavan, also operated by the Kerala government and referred to as Kerala House in Vashi. At least 500 people visit Kerala House in advance each year for the Onam celebration, which is typically reserved in advance.

But this year, it was decided to simply have first come, first served instead of pre-bookings because of the congestion and confusion brought on by both on-the-spot and pre-booked reservations. Deepu SS, Manager of Kerala House, Vashi, stated, “This time, we had planned several events like Chenda melam, but due to the Wayanad catastrophe, the government cancelled it and kept it limited to simply sadya and adorning the entrance with the ‘Pookalam’ (floral decoration on floor).

Onam Sadhya has been available for pre-booking at numerous hotels, including The Kerala Table in Vashi, Kerala Tales, Grace, and Royal Rasoi in Nerul. Furthermore, for more than a week already, Malayalees who prepare their own “sadhya” at home have been swarming the South Indian merchants. For Priya Nikhil, a resident of Nerul who has been traveling abroad, this is her first opportunity to enjoy the occasion with her parents after many years away.

“It’s especially special this year because I’ll be celebrating Onam with my parents, making the Pookalam and making the sadhya.” Nikhil expressed his excitement that his kids will be able to celebrate Onam with their grandparents this year. It’s a great opportunity to recreate childhood memories with them.

In the meantime, a variety of events are scheduled for Navi Mumbaikars to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday at Nexus Mall in Seawoods. The Chenda melam, an orchestra of five instruments that is really a temple art form that has evolved in Kerala, will open the cultural events at 5:45 p.m. at the mall’s entrance.

Men disguised as Maveli, Vamana, and Parasurama would enter the store after the program and start chatting with the customers. At approximately 6.30 p.m., a troupe will perform Thiruvathirakali, a traditional dance form of Kerala, which will be followed by performances of Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and Theyyam.
